What a woman’s purse says about her personality

I’m not a fashion stylist or even a handbag designer, but I can tell you from experience– a woman’s purse tells a guy everything he needs to know about her personality. I say this with confidence based on the women I have dated over the years and the sisters who tortured me growing up.

This insight was reinforced last week while riding the L-train with a girlfriend. We started noticing all of the different kinds of handbags on the train when I decided to put my fashion knowledge into action.

“I bet you I can tell you where that woman is from based on her purse.”

And then, I boldly predicted which women were from Brooklyn, the Lower East Side, Long Island, Queens and even which women came from money.

Guys can tell a lot by the drink a woman orders at the bar, (click here to read 212Access article on that) but you can tell even more by the purse she carries every day. A handbag and purse are a part of her identity. She holds it dear for a reason, which is why you can use that purse to gain insight into a woman’s psyche.

Here is MY rundown of how men can decipher a woman’s personality based on the type of handbag or purse she is carrying.

Chemistry.com

Trust Fund Baby: I dated a trust fund baby and she toted a Marc Jacobs handbag with lots of pockets and zippers. It was a practical and safe bag that was similar to her personality. Her handbag didn’t scream, “look at me” because she didn’t feel the need to tell people to look at her. Her money spoke for her. If you want to approach a girl with a purse like this, make sure you check your watch in front of her so she can see you’re wearing a Rolex.

Artistic Personality: These are the easiest women to pick out. Their handbags and purses make you look twice, even though guys don’t understand why. You won’t see any labels on her bag, but you will see colors and designs that make your pupils dilate. This is the girl who wants a guy who is going to challenge her creativity and ideas. If you want to approach a girl with an artistic purse, pretend everything is art and you will get her ear. Her heart? That’s another story.

Attention Grabber: If a woman carries a Louis Vuitton bag, you better give her a lot of attention. My little sister carries one of these handbags and let me say – she requires a lot of attention (and I love her dearly for it). Everything is meticulous. Her hair, makeup, clothes, shoes, finger nails (sorry, I meant nail polish), are always perfectly coifed. That’s because this woman takes a lot of pride in her appearance. If you want to talk to a woman like this, go to the bathroom and check your hair before you approach her. If your hair is unkempt, grab some water and spit and style that mop before you try to dazzle her with your presence.

Party Girl: I’d advise all men to stay away from these girls but if you are a glutton for pain, then by all means pursue the challenge for a night. A party girl is going to have a purse that she can hold in her hand and still dance. Yes, it’s a complete stereotype but it makes practical sense. Have you ever seen a girl on the dance floor holding a Marc Jacobs bag? A girl with an artistic bag would never make it past the tough door men in New York – unless she was a famous model. The party girl’s purse will be small and easy to throw over her shoulder without much weight. I think women call it a “clutch” bag. It’s a bag she can hold with only a few fingers for guys who need a visual. You’ll see a lot of these bags in the nightclubs and bars.

Executive Suite: This woman is all about her career. If you want your male independence, go for a woman who holds one of these purses because she’s not going to have much time for you. Her ambition will hold her attention and you will likely be the one waiting for her at the dinner table, complaining that the food is getting cold. This high-powered, executive suite woman is going to carry a professional handbag that is conservative and very likely only has one opening at the top. I think that is because she wants easy and fast access to her makeup without the hassle of finding which pocket she placed her lipstick in. What does her purse look like? The next time you see a woman wearing a suit, take a minute to observe her purse or handbag. They all look the same. Her purse will blend into her outfit similar to that leather briefcase that holds every guy’s laptop.

There are many more styles of purses that will tell a man what a woman’s personality is like but I will leave the rest of the pontificating to the professionals. And please throw some comments if you disagree with my male perspective on purses and handbags.
